Addressing the Independence Day function in Motilal Nehru Stadium here, he said the move will give relief to farmers.</p> <p>“The loans of several farmers were not waived despite the previous government promising it. The interest on these loans continued to grow. Such loan interest amounts will be deposited by my government so that farmers get relief,” he said. The Congress had promised farm loan waiver ahead of the 2018 Assembly polls, and the BJP has been alleging that several farmers stopped repaying amounts believing they would be covered in this scheme.</p> <p>Announcing a diversification plan in the agriculture sector, the CM said farmers and their private partners can engage in cultivation of oil seeds and medicinal plants, though this move will not cover growing of rice and wheat. Speaking at the handover ceremony of  a Dornier aircraft from India today, Mr Wickremesinghe said India’s “global dominance is a tribute to Pandit (Jawaharlal) Nehru” and he was the one who showed the way forward.</p> <p>“India today is becoming a world power and it is still on the rise and by mid-Century, when we are no longer there, we could see a powerful India playing a dominant role on the global stage. That itself is a tribute to Pandit Nehru,” he said.</p> <p>Referring to India’s Independence Day anniversary, Mr Wickremesinghe said he was inspired by Nehru’s famous “tryst with destiny” speech as India gained freedom in 1947.</p> <p>In this context, he also recalled an anecdote about the time Nehru helped Sri Lanka become part of the United Nations.</p> <p>“I remember and I was told how his (Nehru’s) representative VK Krishna Menon gave all the support to my father to go around in New York arranging for Sri Lanka’s entry into the United Nations. My father knew him (Nehru) well. I only saw him at a distance as a student, watching his car pass by on the way to India House,” he said.</p> <p>India and Sri Lanka – which is also marking 75 years of Independence — are “two sides of the same coin” and both countries must work together to strengthen their relationship, the Lankan President said.</p> <p>Thanking India for handing over of the maritime surveillance aircraft, Mr Wickremesinghe said India is looking after its own interests. But “India must also look at its role as a global power,” he added.</p> <p>Emphasising the importance of ties between the two nations, Mr Wickremesinghe advised rising politicians of Sri Lanka to “get to know their Indian colleagues.</p> <p>“My advice to rising politicians in Sri Lanka, those who aspire for higher office, is — get to know your Indian colleagues. (AP photo)</div> </section> <p>PARIS: Hundreds more people were evacuated from their homes as wildfires continued to rage out of control in southwestern France, authorities said on Friday. <br />More than 1,000 firefighters, supported by nine water-bomber aircraft, have been battling since Tuesday to master two blazes fanned by scorching heat, tinder-box conditions and strong winds. <br />“The situation is still adverse,” said the authority for the Gironde department, where the blazes are raging. <br />The fires have now burnt 7,300 hectares, a total that increased by 2,000 hectares overnight, authorities said. <br />Another wildfire that broke out near the southeastern town of Tarascon on Thursday and burnt at least 1,000 hectares has been stabilised, according to firefighters. <br />Wildfires also raged across Portugal, Spain and Croatia, burning homes and threatening livelihoods, as much of Europe baked in a <!-- -->heatwave<!-- --> that has pushed temperatures into the mid-40Cs in some parts. <br />One of the two <!-- -->Gironde fires<!-- --> was around the town of Landiras south of Bordeaux, where 4,200 hectares have been burnt, roads closed and an extra 480 residents evacuated, bringing the total there to almost a 1,000. <br />The other blaze, that has already burnt 3,100 hectares, was along the Atlantic Coast close to the “Dune du Pilat” – the tallest
