“Have To Shed Shackles Of Servitude, Be Proud”: PM’s 5 Pledges

PM Modi is addressing the nation for the ninth consecutive time on Independence Day.

New Delhi:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the nation from the historic Red Fort as India celebrates 75 years of Independence, listed five pledges (panchpran) the citizens must take to fulfil freedom fighters’ dreams for India by 2047.

Here are the 5 pledges listed by PM Modi:

  1. India must become a developed nation in 25 years. “I urge youth to dedicate next 25 years of their lives for nation’s development; we will work towards development of entire humanity,” PM Modi said.

  2. The PM appealed to the people to shed colonial prejudices and shcackles of servitude. We should not try to become like others, there should be no trace of slavery in our mindset, he said. “Sometimes our talent is restricted by language barriers, we need to be proud of every language in our country,” he said. “We must not seek validation from the world. We must maintain our identity as a proud nation,” he added.

  3. We should be proud of our heritage. “When we are connected to our roots, only then can we fly high; when we fly high, we will provide solutions to the entire world,” the PM said.

  4. We should be united as a people to work towards the upliftment of the nation. Equality cornerstone of India’s progress; we need to make sure we are united through mantra of “India first”: PM Modi said. He also spoke of the need for equality between the people, specifically mentioning equality for women. “Respect for women is an important pillar for India’s growth, we need to support our ‘Nari Shakti’,” he said.

  5. “The fifth pledge is the duty of citizens. It is the duty of people to save electricity, water. If we follow this, we can reach desired results ahead of time,” he said, adding that these duties apply to all citizens of India including even the Prime Minister and Chief Ministers. “Any nation that has progressed, has discipline ingrained in its citizens; if all follow their responsibilities, India will grow fast,” he said,

Wildfires in West explode in size amid hot, windy conditions

SAN DIEGO: Wildfires in California and Montana exploded in size overnight amid windy, hot conditions and were quickly encroaching on neighborhoods, forcing evacuation orders for over 100 homes on Saturday, while an Idaho blaze was spreading.
In California’s Klamath National Forest, the fast-moving McKinney fire, which started on Friday, went from charring just over 1 square mile (1 square kilometer) to scorching as much as 62 square miles (160 square kilometers) by Saturday in a largely rural area near the Oregon state line, according to fire officials. The fire burned down at least a dozen residences and wildlife was seen fleeing the area to avoid the flames.
“It’s continuing to grow with erratic winds and thunderstorms in the area and we’re in triple digit temperatures,” said Caroline Quintanilla, a spokeswoman at Klamath National Forest.
California governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency on Saturday as the fire intensified. The proclamation allows Newsom more flexibility to make emergency response and recovery effort decisions and access federal aid.
It also allows “firefighting resources from other states to assist California crews in battling the fires,” according to a statement from the governor’s office.
Meanwhile in Montana, the Elmo wildfire nearly tripled in size to more than 11 square miles (about 28 square kilometers) within a few miles of the town of Elmo. Roughly 200 miles (320 kilometers) to the south, Idaho residents remained under evacuation orders as the Moose Fire in the Salmon-Challis National Forest charred more than 67.5 square miles (174.8 square kilometers) in timbered land near the town of Salmon. It was 17% contained.
A significant build-up of vegetation was fueling the McKinney fire, said Tom Stokesberry, a spokesman with the US Forest Service for the region.
“It’s a very dangerous fire — the geography there is steep and rugged, and this particular area hasn’t burned in a while,” he said.
A small fire was also burning nearby, outside the town of Seiad, Stokesberry said. With lightning predicted over the next few days, resources from all over California were being brought in to help fight the region’s fires, he said.
McKinney’s explosive growth forced crews to shift from trying to control the perimeter of the blaze to trying to protect homes and critical infrastructure like water tanks and power lines, and assist in evacuations in California’s northernmost county of Siskiyou.
Deputies and law enforcement were knocking on doors in the county seat of Yreka and the town of Fort Jones to urge residents to get out and safely evacuate their livestock onto trailers. Automated calls were being sent to land phone lines as well because there were areas without cell phone service.
Over 100 homes were ordered evacuated and authorities were warning people to be on high alert. Smoke from the fire caused the closure of portions of Highway 96.
The Pacific Coast Trail Association urged hikers to get to the nearest town while the US Forest Service closed a 110-mile (177-kilometer) section of the trail from the Etna Summit to the Mt. Ashland Campground in southern Oregon.
Oregon state representative Dacia Grayber, who is a firefighter, was camping with her husband, who is also in the fire service, near the California state line when gale-force winds awoke them just after midnight.
The sky was glowing with strikes of lightening in the clouds, while ash was blowing at them, though they were in Oregon, about 10 miles (about 16 kilometers) away. Intense heat from the fire had sent up a massive pyrocumulonimbus cloud, which can produce its own weather system including winds and thunderstorms, Grayber said.
“These were some of the worst winds I’ve ever been in and we’re used to big fires,” she said. “I thought it was going to rip the roof top tent off of our truck. We got the heck out of there.”
On their way out, they came across hikers on the Pacific Coast Trail fleeing to safety.
“The terrifying part for us was the wind velocity,” she said. “It went from a fairly cool breezy night to hot, dry hurricane-force winds. Usually that happens with a fire during the day but not at night. I hope for everyone’s sake this dies down but it’s looking like it’s going to get worse.”
In western Montana, the wind-driven Elmo fire forced evacuations of homes and livestock as it raced across grass and timber, according to The National Interagency Fire Center, based in Idaho. The agency estimated it would take nearly a month to contain the blaze.
Smoke shut down a portion of Highway 28 between Hot Springs and Elmo because of the thick smoke, according to the Montana department of transportation.
Crews from several different agencies were fighting the fire on Saturday, including the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes Fire Division. Six helicopters were making drops on the fire, aided by 22 engines on the ground.
In Idaho, more than 930 wildland firefighters and support staff were battling the Moose fire on Saturday and protecting homes, energy infrastructure and the Highway 93 corridor, a major north-south route.
A red flag warning indicated that the weather could make things worse with the forecast calling for “dry thunderstorms,” with lightning, wind and no rain.
Meanwhile, crews made significant progress in battling another major blaze in California that forced evacuations of thousands of people near Yosemite National Park earlier this month. The Oak fire was 52% contained by Saturday, according to a Cal Fire incident update.
As fires raged across the West, the US House on Friday approved wide-ranging legislation aimed at helping communities in the region cope with increasingly severe wildfires and drought — fueled by climate change — that have caused billions of dollars in damage to homes and businesses in recent years.
The legislative measure approved by federal lawmakers on Friday combines 49 separate bills and would increase firefighter pay and benefits; boost resiliency and mitigation projects for communities affected by climate change; protect watersheds; and make it easier for wildfire victims to get federal assistance.
The bill now goes to the Senate, where California Democratic senator Dianne Feinstein has sponsored a similar measure.

Weight Loss: Tom Hardy’s transformation into The Dark Knight Rises’ Bane will immensely motivate you!

British actor Tom Hardy is one of the leading actors in Hollywood who has stunned everyone with spectacular roles. Even so, his fitness routine, especially his stellar transformation for his role as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises has kept everyone very intrigued. Having to bulk up in no time to take on the role of Bane is no less than a miraculous transformation.

Let’s take a look at how Tom Hardy was successful in transforming himself completely into his character.

tom hardy (1)

How much did Tom Hardy gain for his role?
The actor gained over 30 lb which is over 13 kgs for his role as Bane. He managed to gain this much weight in a short amount of time—over 3 months — by adhering to circuit training that involved his essential body parts where he could gain muscle.

What is the circuit training that Tom went for?
Tom opted for a workout that has seven, then five and lastly three repetitions:

The square: 10, seven, five, three reps

One has to position their hands in a way so they’re ‘square’ with the shoulders. Keep the elbows tucked in while moving alongside the torso to detonate the triceps.

The rectangle: 10, seven, five, three reps

One has to set hands wide apart so that the chest, arms and the floor form a rectangle.

The eagle: 10, seven, five, three reps

One has to set hands wide apart, then spread the fingers while lowering the body and then turn them outwards.

The kong: 10, seven, five, three reps

Assume a press-up position on the knuckles with both the arms kept at shoulder width length. One has to then lower the chest to the floor while letting the elbows bend back like a grasshopper’s legs.

Tom also went for an intense 4-day a week program that focused on his arm, chest, shoulders, back, legs and abs.

The actor had to look ‘as big as possible for his role as Bane. Tom had revealed that he was already overweight at the time, almost 90kgs when they were shooting the film.

What was Tom’s food intake during his role preparation?

During his preparation for his role, Tom had to eat as much pizza as he could. In addition to that, he was given a strict diet plan to follow that had a variety of supplements that he had to take. A few of them included:

Whey protein: This builds up muscle growth as it repairs the muscle and prevents intense soreness after exercise.

Creatin: This increases muscle mass and helps the muscles to recover faster while increasing muscle strength.

Pre-workout supplements: This enhances the body’s performance levels and improves stamina.

Protein bars: This is a tasty source of protein that improves muscle mass.

Multivitamins: Taking care of the body’s nutrition is necessary. Hence, the additional multivitamins can improve this intake.

Tom also had to eat a variety of high-protein dishes that could get his bulky and ready to take on the character of Bane in no time. These included sufficient amounts of rice, vegetables, fruits, chicken, tuna, milk and oats.

Isn’t it interesting how Tom completely transformed himself? If you want to know any of your favourite celebrity’s transformations into their roles, let us know in the comments below!

As many as 75 Indian scholars embark on the academic journey to the UK on Chevening scholarships

banner img

The recent UK-India MoU on mutual recognition of academic qualifications will open roads for skilled academics looking for a job in the UK
UK Government’s flagship Chevening Scholarships and Fellowships this year offered 75 fully funded support for one year to Indian students, to celebrate the 75th anniversary of India’s Independence. Over the years, there has been a marked increase in the number of scholarships given out in India. This year, there has been a focus on talents from tier 2 and tier 3 cities and first-generation learners, displaying a desire to study and return to serve society. The British Council in India is offering at least 18 scholarships for women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and six English scholarships. HSBC India will sponsor 15 scholarships, Pearson India will sponsor two, Hindustan Unilever, Tata Sons and Duolingo will sponsor one each as part of the 75 scholarships.
British High Commissioner Alex Ellis is delighted about the increased participation from smaller cities. “This is the best way to go to another country and meet equally talented people. We want to attract talents to visit the UK. They return as an enriched person after completing their studies and able to contribute more to their own country,” said Mr Ellis, while talking to Education Times at the pre-departure event for the scholars embarking on a journey to the UK in September.
Commenting on the recent UK-India MoU on mutual recognition of academic qualifications between the two countries, he said, “This development is particularly relevant if you are looking for a government job because the one-year master’s completed in the UK will now be recognised by India. This furthers a step to increase the confidence and trust between the two countries.” Underlining the quality of one-year master’s which offers better exposure, Ellis further added, “This will increase students’ exchange between the two countries. Recognition of Indian degrees by the UK will help in seeking a job in the UK.”
Considering the growing interest of Indians to study in the UK, the British embassy is taking measures to speed up the visa process. A few years back, only around 20,000 students visited the UK for studies, but the numbers now have increased manifolds. “There is every possibility that India will soon overtake China in terms of international students’ inflow to the UK. Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries in turbulent times as seen in Afghanistan and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, will help in deepening the relationship between the two democracies,” added Ellis.
The depreciation of the Indian Rupee would be a concern for those aspiring to study abroad. “A great scholarship helps the students, for instance, Chevening covers the entire cost of education and stay in the UK. From what I have observed, Indians are ready to walk the extra mile to improve their education,” added Ellis.
High Potential Individual (HPI) visas have been opened by the UK that allows two years stay to qualified people who have degrees from 50 prominent universities. “After Brexit, some of the policies have been changed to initiate controlled migration. However, this rule has made it relatively easy for Indian nationals to go to the UK. As of now, around 44% of skilled work visas go to Indians. You will see talented people spending time in the UK, studying and working there and eventually coming back to India, which is enriching for both the countries,” said Ellis.
Stories of Scholars
Dr Rushikesh Andhalkar, MBBS (from Rashin village, Ahmednagar)
As a doctor, with a deep desire to eradicate the problem of malnutrition in the tribal belt of Melghat and scarce healthcare facilities in the drought-prone southern Marathwada, Dr Rushikesh Andhalkar wants to hone his academic writing, methods of accessing problems and research abilities, while completing his Master’s in Global Public Health and Policy at Queen Mary Institute of London.
His parents worked as Ayurvedic practitioners in Rashin, which firmed up Dr Rushikesh’s desire to work in rural areas. “Chevening looks for students who have a future vision. As a medical student, I am looking for a solution for the villagers who have to commute for two hours to reach a hospital. Also, Indian villages need holistic medical facilities by combining Homeopathy and Ayurveda.” Volunteering during the Covid pandemic, Dr Rushikesh helped several patients battling mental health problems during isolation and lockdown. “I hope to use the knowledge acquired in the UK to upgrade the public health facilities in Indian villages,” he says.
Idrish Mohammad, lawyer (from Kuchera village, Nagor, Rajasthan)
A first-generation learner from a nomadic tribe called Kamalia, Idrish Mohammad studied in village schools where the medium of instruction was the local Marwari dialect. Idrish practically learnt to speak English and chaste Hindi while completing his LLB at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), New Delhi. Preparing to study LLM in Human Right Conflict and Justice at SOAS University of London, Idrish says getting Chevening scholarship is the biggest milestone. Education in the UK will give me a global perspective on the effective implementation of law. “I am involved with several projects that provide education to village children. Youngsters from Kamalia tribe have less than 1% literacy, which can be improved only by constant support,” says Idrish. He aims to set up a centre offering pro-bono legal services, after studying and gathering experience in the UK. “This will be an opportunity to connect with talents from 150 countries, who will have a unique approach to dealing with human crises,” he says. As a lawyer with a deep sense of commitment towards his village, Idrish dreams of seeing youngsters from his village spreading their wings through education.
